When Denise Dietiker moved into a new home last month, it marked the end of a long season of loss and uncertainty, and the beginning of stability, dignity, and hope.
Haywood Habitat for Humanity announced the groundbreaking of its first Aging-in-Place home, marking a major step forward in addressing the housing needs of older adults in Haywood County.
The new home is intentionally designed to allow a homeowner to live safely and independently as they age. Features include step-free entry, wider doorways, accessible bathroom and kitchen design, and energy-efficient construction that reduces long-term utility costs. The home reflects Haywood Habitat’s commitment to long-term stability — not just housing, but housing that works for people over a lifetime.
“This is about dignity and stability,” said Jared D. Iraggi, executive director of Haywood Habitat for Humanity. “Too many seniors are… read more here at The Mountaineer.

Haywood Habitat for Humanity was recently featured in The Mountaineer for the launch of three new affordable homes in our community. The article highlights the impact these homes will have for local families and reflects the hard work of our volunteers, partners, and supporters who make projects like this possible.
“Haywood Habitat for Humanity is seeking applicants for three new affordable homes to be built in Haywood County.
Two homes will be constructed off Jonathan Creek and one in Clyde. One of the Jonathan Creek homes will be designed as an Aging in Place home, intentionally built to support the needs of older adults through features that promote accessibility, safety, and long-term independence. The remaining two homes will be constructed based on family need and household composition.
These homes are part of our ongoing commitment to affordable housing in Haywood County. Learn more about how you can support our work or get involved as a volunteer here.
When Luis and Cleidi Garcia speak of angels, it’s hard to know precisely who they mean. Maybe it’s real angels — the Garcia’s faith has been a driving force behind their family’s survival over the last year since Helene swamped their Clyde trailer — or maybe it’s the community that has gathered around him over that same period.
GIVING THANKS — Luis and Cleidi Garcia thought that Helene might have derailed their Habitat for Humanity house. But a community came together to make it happen.Andrew Marshall
Much of that community assembled at the Garcia’s new home a few weeks ago to watch Haywood Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Jared Iraggi hand over a set of keys. The Garcia’s three children clung to the couple shyly as the crowd burst into applause as Iraggi dropped the jangling bundle into Luis’ hand.
At Haywood Habitat for Humanity, every milestone brings us closer to a community where everyone has a safe, dignified, and affordable place to live. We’re excited to share three important updates with you— each one a powerful reminder of how your support builds more than houses.
Thank you for building with us. None of this work would be possible without you. Whether you give, volunteer, or advocate, you are helping families in Haywood County build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
Together, we’re not just building homes—we’re building hope that will last for generations.
With gratitude, The Haywood Habitat for Humanity Team

The Garcia Family’s New Beginning The Garcia family–displaced by Hurricane Helene in September 2024–now has a place to call their own. Their dedication ceremony took place this past Friday, September 12th. More than 75 supporters turned out to support the Garcias and celebrate their new home. United Way of Haywood County contributed nearly $20,000 to furnish the home. The Dedication represents a new chapter for the Garcias and serves as a testament to the power of community support and perseverance.
We are overjoyed to announce the upcoming home dedication for the Garcia family as they prepare to move into their new Habitat home!
Friday, the 12th at 2 PM 232 Sylvan St, Waynesville, NC 28786
Light refreshments will be served
The Garcia family’s journey has been one of resilience and hope. After losing their home on the river bank in Clyde to Hurricane Helene last year, they have worked tirelessly to build a safe, stable place to call their own. With three children, this new home represents a foundation for security, growth, and new beginnings.
The dedication will include a blessing, words of gratitude, and time to reflect on the past year. Most importantly, it will be a moment to celebrate the hard work of the Garcia family, our volunteers, and the generosity of our community.
We would be honored for you to join us in welcoming the Garcias home!
