DO YOU QUALIFY FOR A HABITAT HOME?

A safe, stable place to call home is life-changing. It provides a foundation for health, security, and opportunity, helping families build strength and stability that lasts for generations.

Unfortunately, for many families in Haywood County, finding affordable, quality housing is a significant challenge. Rising costs and limited options leave too many without the stability a home provides.

Haywood Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to helping God’s people by providing decent, safe, and affordable shelter. Our program is not a giveaway—we work in partnership with families to build homes that they can afford.

Each house we build is sold to our partner families with an affordable mortgage. Every homeowner listed on the deed also contributes 250 hours of “sweat equity” by helping build their home or the homes of others. By selling the house at our cost, we keep monthly payments manageable with a no-interest mortgage.

HABITAT GUIDELINES

Applicants must be residents of North Carolina for a minimum of 12 months and currently living in Haywood County at application date. Applicants cannot be on the sexual offender registry.  A criminal background check is conducted for all applicants.

Based upon the recommendation of the Homeowner Selection Committee, Haywood Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors selects our future homeowners.  The decision is based on the following criteria:

  • Need – Applicants must be unable to qualify for a conventional bank loan, and their current housing must be inadequate (unsafe, overcrowded, unsanitary, unaffordable, unsafe neighborhood, or inaccessible). As part of the application process, the Homeowner Selection Committee will conduct a home interview with the applicants.
  • Ability to Pay – Applicants must have a steady source of verifiable, legal income, and earn 60%-80%  of the county’s median income based on family size. (See current qualifying income guidelines below.)  The monthly mortgage payment cannot exceed 30% of the homeowner’s gross income.
  • Willingness to Partner – Each applicant who will be listed on the deed must invest 250 hours of “sweat equity” in the construction of their home, or the home of another. All applicants are required to attend Habitat home ownership education classes.
