Thanks to a 2021 grant from the Community Foundation of WNC funded through the Mib and Phil Medford Endowment Fund, residents of our Chestnut Park neighborhood have a beautiful new greenway. The greenway, completed in mid-December, provides physical activity and social engagement opportunities for the ten families residing in the neighborhood. Bordering the back of each of the home lots, the space provides a safe, accessible area for walking, bicycling, and accessing the neighboring Town of Waynesville park. An additional benefit of the space is the width and flat surface make it accessible for those with mobility challenges. “Thoughtful community design that improves our residents’ health and well-being is a priority for Haywood Habitat. This grant along with other community support has made it possible for residents, especially the children, to have a safe place to walk, play, and ride bicycles. Without the greenway that would not be possible as the street where the homes are located is fairly busy. We are grateful for this support,” said Jamye Sheppard, Executive Director.
The Medford Fund supports beautification, streetscape improvements, and other public amenities in Waynesville.
